Sunset Run On The Beach
Posted by Cheeseball under: Run.
It was my very first time running on the beach sand. I ran where the sand was wet and packed, rather than on the soft sand. It definitely felt different from running on the pavement - a little bouncy on the ankles. I bet it was hitting my muscles differently from my usual runs. I totally forgot that it was going to be windy at the beach. Yes, it was windy, but it could have been much worse.
Oo, here’s something noteworthy - I ran without my ipod today for the first time. I just listened to the waves and my breath. It wasn’t boring at all, to my surprise. The beautiful scenery with the sunset was more than plenty to keep myself entertained for half an hour. Avoiding the wave of water kept me busy too:) It was fun seeing the birds running away from me, watching other people walking, jogging, splashing in the water, or just sitting and watching the sunset. The only thing about running on the beach is the angle of the sand, tilted to one side. My ankles had to be tilted to the right or left at all times. I don’t feel any pain from it or anything, so that’s good.
Here’s my very approximate distance and time from today’s run. Trying to avoid the water and the curve of the beach probably added a tiny bit more distance to this, but this still gives me the ballpark:
First 0.6mi - 6:56 (11:33/mi)
Second 0.6mi - 7:02 (11:43/mi)
Next 0.8mi - 8:04 (10:05/mi)
Last 0.8mi - 7:39 (9:33/mi)
The side pain came right after I hit 23 minutes (just below my right ribs, closer to the center of the belly, rather than far on the right side). I was experimenting breathing with my nose only, and then the side started hurting a little bit. I changed back to breathing with my mouth, but it didn’t seem to make much difference. I don’t know if that was even the cause. Anyway, the pain wasn’t so bad. It kinda faded after a bit, then I was able to speed up for my last 200 meters or so.
Ahh, that was fun. I hope to do it early in the morning next time, with the view of sunrise

Glad you got out for a beach run. What a great way to end a day! Definitely try one in the morning. The tide may be lower so you may be able to avoid running on the irksome slope (or you could just go straight for the killer soft sand). The best part, there’ll be less people out and it makes you feel like you have the beach all to yourself ![]()
