After watching my friends play football, I joined in to run around on the sand too. My butt got all sore the next day.

I used my fins for the first time for a swim work out. (I had them for bodyboarding) Wow, I can go really fast with them! lol …I felt like I was cheating, although I did feel more force on my thighs. Another woman swimmer in my lane was going faster than me without fins, and the other older guy in the same lane was going as fast as I was by just strong kicks with fins, no arms. Wow. Lots of practice can do that to you. They were fun to swim with too
Maybe because of the Olympics, but there were so many swimmers out tonight at the workout. We took ALL lanes in the pool with 24 swimmers. It was a lot of fun! Our coach made fun of us for not being out on dates on a Friday night. Haha, very funny.
1) 3 x 50 warm up
2) 2 x 25 kick
3) 3 x 50 kick on 1:00
4) 3 x 100 on 1:40
It was on 2:00 at the beginning, but our lane was making a good time (because of the fins for me) that the coach shortened the interval time to 1:40.
5) 2 x 25 breath control (no breathing)
- Easy 50 -
6) 5 x 100 on 1:40
- Easy 50 -
7) 6 x 25 breath control on 1:00 (0-1 breathing)
“Relax so the breath lasts” - Ya, if I relax and go too slow, I’d have to take more breaths!
- 25 to the other side of the pool -
8 ) 1 x 25 ALL OUT
9) 1 x 50 ALL OUT
It’s like the Olympics! Woohoo00
- 1 x 50 breaststroke -
Just strolled by myself before I got out of the pool. After wearing the fins for an hour, swimming with no fins felt really weird. I felt naked and slow.
I watched Michael Phelps win by .01 seconds just now. OMG that was so close, and such a good race! What an amazing athlete. Dara Torres just won the heat for tomorrow’s 50m freestyle final. Wow. Just wow. She’s my new heroin and the uber-ultimate inspiration

Keeping my neighborhood run over 3 miles by going slow for the first half. I used the leftover energy at the end to speed up. I saw four other runners on the street this morning. Lots of people training in the morning
Stiff knees for the first half, but they became smooth later.
First .8 miles - 8:16 (10:20/mi)
Next 1.6 miles - 17:42 (11:03/mi)
Last .8 miles - 7:28 (9:20/mi)

WOOHOOO~~~!!! I finally ran 5km outside! And it wasn’t hard!! I paced myself very well today. Sunday morning run was hard because I went too fast at the beginning, so I started out slow today. That turned out to be a big success! I had good energy throughout, and I didn’t get the side pain! Towards the end of the first half is a hill, but I took it nice and slow, and I was totally OK! Wow, I’m so proud of myseeelf
Yippie yippie!!!
Approximate distance & time:
First .8 miles - 8.16 (10:20/mi)
Next 1.6 miles - 17.42 (11:03/mi) I didn’t hit the button on my watch at the half point
Last .8 miles - 7.58 (9:57/mi)

I kinda wanted to go to a swim workout, but the Sunday morning workout wasn’t on their latest schedule
So I just went out to run instead. Increased the neighborhood run distance by another tiny block. The last quarter distance was a bit hard with some side pain (gurrrr!!! it still comes when I go long distance), but I sped up when I saw my home. It’s hard to resist it when I see the goal. Maybe I needed to slow down for the first half so I could enjoy my running. Pacing, pacing, pacing!!

So here I am. I became a member of a masters swim club. I’m paying my monthly fee now, so there’s no choice but to go. I was a little nervous about going to this class because it wasn’t a 101 class any more, but I did alright. This one was called, “mid distance” class. Heck, what happens in the long distance practice. My right foot gave up towards the end today, haha. I’d say I had a pretty good workout
Today’s menu:
1) 2 x 50 stroke check by coach to see my level
2) 2 x 50 warm up
Coach told me to spread my thumb apart from the other fingers and feel the water.
3) 2 x 50 kick
Apparently, my kicks aren’t great - sinking a bit. Coach told me I could use fins. (actually most people in the class were using fins) He also told me that I was probably better at breaststroke kicks - so that’s what I did for the second 50, and he was happy with that one. He called it, “natural” …how did he know?! Breaststroke used to be my fav.
4) 2 x 25 fast kick
Arrrg… more kicks… faster.
5) 3 x 50 on :50
I think it was 3×50 on :50, but can’t remember for sure. I didn’t have much resting time at all in between the intervals. That, I remember.
6) 2 sets of the following:
3 x 100 on 2:00
2 x 75 on 1:30
2 x 50 on 1:00
2 x 25 on :30
then 1 set of:
1 x 100 on 2:00 - my right foot and calf cramped up here. I was done for the day.
2 x 75 on 1:30
2 x 50 on 1:00
2 x 25 on :30
1 x 50 easy breast stroke while other people were finishing up.
I’m watching the Olympics opening ceremony as I’m posting this right now. Wow… this is going to be a fun couple of weeks!!

It was my very first time running on the beach sand. I ran where the sand was wet and packed, rather than on the soft sand. It definitely felt different from running on the pavement - a little bouncy on the ankles. I bet it was hitting my muscles differently from my usual runs. I totally forgot that it was going to be windy at the beach. Yes, it was windy, but it could have been much worse.
Oo, here’s something noteworthy - I ran without my ipod today for the first time. I just listened to the waves and my breath. It wasn’t boring at all, to my surprise. The beautiful scenery with the sunset was more than plenty to keep myself entertained for half an hour. Avoiding the wave of water kept me busy too
It was fun seeing the birds running away from me, watching other people walking, jogging, splashing in the water, or just sitting and watching the sunset. The only thing about running on the beach is the angle of the sand, tilted to one side. My ankles had to be tilted to the right or left at all times. I don’t feel any pain from it or anything, so that’s good.
Here’s my very approximate distance and time from today’s run. Trying to avoid the water and the curve of the beach probably added a tiny bit more distance to this, but this still gives me the ballpark:
First 0.6mi - 6:56 (11:33/mi)
Second 0.6mi - 7:02 (11:43/mi)
Next 0.8mi - 8:04 (10:05/mi)
Last 0.8mi - 7:39 (9:33/mi)
The side pain came right after I hit 23 minutes (just below my right ribs, closer to the center of the belly, rather than far on the right side). I was experimenting breathing with my nose only, and then the side started hurting a little bit. I changed back to breathing with my mouth, but it didn’t seem to make much difference. I don’t know if that was even the cause. Anyway, the pain wasn’t so bad. It kinda faded after a bit, then I was able to speed up for my last 200 meters or so.
Ahh, that was fun. I hope to do it early in the morning next time, with the view of sunrise
